Trying New Things

Those of you who know me well know that I don't/don't know how to cook.  Well, I can't NOT know how to cook having a daughter, so one of my hobbies these days is trying out recipes.  And if you follow me on Twitter, you know that I've had some successful dishes and some that weren't so successful (that makes the journey fun, right?).

A couple of weeks ago I tried a spinach dip recipe (my favorite appetizer ever!) that wasn't half bad.  And then a co-worker of mine gave me the recipe for a breakfast casserole kind of thing that you can serve any time of the day.  Danny really liked that, and has asked me to make it for tailgating this weekend.  Never thought the day would come when Danny would request a dish be made by me.  I've already thanked my co-worker again for the recipe. :)

A few weeks ago another co-worker of mine made some really good pumpkin bread muffins.  So good I asked for the recipe.  I was a little intimidated at first because I don't bake from scratch (though I can make a mean pound cake when I want to, thanks to a delicious recipe from my aunt).  Anyway, I wanted those pumpkin muffins so bad I decided that I'd go home and make some (had to go out and buy flour and sugar 'cause I didn't really own that kind of stuff.  Sad, I know.)

Well, they turned out pretty good!  Aren't they pretty?  Those are chopped walnuts on top.

And here are my tailgate dishes with it.  Would people eat pumpkin muffins at a tailgate?  Hmmm...I should take them just in case.

We tried a shrimp and wild rice dish earlier this week.  I got it from Kelly's Korner a few days ago -- it's a Paula Dean dish.  Being a seafood and "cream of anything" lover, I was surprised to find it to be too rich.  Too cheesy.  I plan to try it again and tone down the cheddar the recipe suggests.  I tweeted about it and took a twitpic:  http://twitpic.com/mbagj

I will update you guys every once in a while on my journey to be a little more "domestic" in the kitchen.  One of the things I look forward to with Morgan is teaching her to cook, so this is very exciting to me.

Have a great weekend!

  1. Those muffins look delicious! I love to cook. We had a discussion yesterday about choosing to cook versus cleaning. Do you know everyone of my girlfriends chose cleaning?!? All you really need to start cooking is a good slow cooker. It does the cooking for you. Just throw in the ingredients, cover and in a few hours you will have a delicious meal. I can give you some good slow cooker recipes! Just keep trying new dishes and don't give up!
