You Could Save a Life

A couple of weeks ago I received a letter in the mail telling me it's been three years since I've joined the National Bone Marrow Registry.  I remember when my mom mentioned to me about joining when the daughter of a friend of hers needed a bone marrow transplant.  A very sick elementary school-aged girl.

They had a registration drive to find a match for her.  The more people to register, the better chance she had to find a match.  I wasn't a match, my mom wasn't a match, and I'm not sure anyone was a match for her that day (this same little girl currently lives at Children's Hospital).  As you probably know, it's tough finding a match.  In fact, 70% of people who need a transplant find no matches in their own family and rely on donors just like us.  It's even harder for minorities since we make up only a small percentage of the Registry.

So this letter I received in the mail challenged me.  Yes, I'm currently on the Registry and could get that call at anytime, but I could actually do more.  Like encourage others to join the Registry -- which is why I'm reaching out to you.  Please consider joining the National Bone Marrow Registry if you're not already registered.  It doesn't matter if you're black, white, purple, or green, you may be a match for someone.  You could save a life.

We hear about people all the time who have blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, or other diseases like sickle cell.  And most of the time we feel helpless.  We may donate to a cause or even raise money ourselves, but still there is more we can do. This is our chance.

So please consider it.  Do it.  Learn more by clicking the links below or visiting Marrow.org.
