Summer Reading (and Friends)

We spend a lot of time at the library in the summers, and this year was no exception.  We did our summer reading again, attended shows, and just went to the library to play (M loves the pit of puppets and could stay there all day).

A few of the theater shows were sing-a-longs and puppet shows. There was also a reptile show...

...complete with a boa constrictor that the host held over everyone'd head in the audience. I didn't like that part, but the rest of the show was pretty awesome.

And the boa was obviously a nice little fella since he let all the kids pet him at the end of the show. My child is terrified of flies, but will pet a boa constrictor. *sigh* I don't understand...

There was a cute little bubbles show, too...

...where we met up with my dear friend/hometown sista/former roomie, E, and her baby girl, A. We'd spent a little time with them the week before, and had planned to go to this particular show together since her baby girl loved bubbles. So sweet.

Love spending time with them.
Loved spending time with them! It probably won't happen again until next summer since E, too, is a teacher. It's teacher life for the next 10 months for both of us. :-)

To wrap up M's summer reading (and earn more prize tickets), she made a robot.

Finished robot!

On display.

All her prize tickets for reading (and making the robot).

With her summer reading prize, a blue horse.

M read over 1,000 pages this summer, and they were mostly pages she read herself. That number could have been much higher had I made her read a little more, but I didn't. I let her watch of ton of TV/iPad/Netflix/YouTube because I felt like this was her last summer of being "free" from the "school life." So she only read when she wanted to. I had to remind her at times that she was working toward the blue horse she'd been eyeing all summer, and then she'd pull out a book or two and get some pages in. She knew she wanted that horse, and she chose to work for it. No one ever tells you how much YOU are rewarded as a parent watching your child get something he or she worked for. It's a really good feeling.

Anyhoo, our summer reading and library fun was great this year. Until next year...
